🧭 Why Visit

A Roman amphitheater that never retired — 2,000 years old and still staging opera under the stars for 15,000 a night, candles lit at dusk across the stone tiers. Aida here is one of the great nights of a traveling life.

🏛️ A Little History

Built around 30 AD — decades before the Colosseum — the Arena survived earthquakes, quarrying, and every era's neglect because Verona kept using it: tournaments, theater, and since 1913 the summer opera festival born for Verdi's centenary.

💡 Did You Know?

The opening-night tradition of audience candles ('mocoleti') turns the tiers into a constellation before the overture. The Arena's pink-tinged limestone comes from Valpolicella — the wine hills and the monument share the same stone.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is opera season at the Arena?
The summer opera festival runs from mid-June through early September. The 2025 season features Aida, Carmen, and Tosca. Book tickets early as popular dates sell out months in advance.
What are the best seats for opera?
Gold sector (poltronissime) offers the best views but costs €200+. The numbered stone steps (gradinata) from rows 10-30 offer great value at €35-50. Avoid unnumbered seats unless you arrive very early.
What happens if it rains during the opera?
Performances continue in light rain. If cancelled after the first act, no refund. If cancelled before, tickets are valid for another date or refunded. Bring a light raincoat just in case.
